When Innovation Meets Opportunity: YOTEL and Miami Tech Works

For YOTEL, the “hotel of the future,” technology isn’t just an amenity, it is the core of the guest experience. However, when their signature robotic concierge faced a critical hardware failure and the original manufacturer shut down its doors, a technical repair issue evolved into a high-stakes challenge: how do you maintain a tech-forward brand when the robot shutdown?

When Innovation Meets Opportunity: YOTEL and Miami Tech Works

The solution didn’t come from a traditional vendor, but from a strategic alignment of Miami’s tech ecosystem.

The Architecture of a Connection

The revitalization of this project was sparked by Lucy, whose extensive industry partnerships bridged the gap between corporate needs and academic excellence. Recognizing the potential for a symbiotic “win,” she facilitated the high-level introductions that set the wheels in motion.
Building on this foundation, Jon Adell acted as the primary architect for the collaboration. By facilitating the connection between YOTEL and Miami Dade College (MDC), Adell successfully integrated the hotel’s real-world challenge into the EPIC Challenge, an innovation project where students tackle complex, industry-grade problems.

Turning Space into Solutions

A project of this scale requires more than just a plan; it requires an environment where innovation can be tested. Sandy Mujica, Chair of School Pathways at MDC, took a direct leadership role in overseeing the project’s integration. By providing dedicated departmental space and opening up unique institutional opportunities, Mujica ensured that the students had the resources and executive support necessary to deconstruct, repair, and reimagine the robotics platform. We can’t wait till YOTELS robot becomes fully operational again.

A Legacy of Leadership

This achievement was made possible through a coordinated effort across leadership and technical expertise:
• Terri-Ann: Senior Director, Whose vision for Miami Tech Works turned a branding crisis into a talent-pipeline success story.
• Joseph Lafleur: Who greenlit the unconventional repair path, prioritizing innovation over traditional outsourcing.
• Philip Colodetti: The Instructor of Technology, providing the technical mentorship to guide students through the intricacies of the repair.
• Benjamin Caban: Director of Sales, who ensured the project remained aligned with YOTEL’s commitment to guest excellence.

This partnership is a testament to the power of the Miami tech scene. It proves that when industry leaders like YOTEL and academic pillars like MDC collaborate through the EPIC Challenge, we don’t just fix machines, we build the future of the technology workforce.
